Wondering how a Neighborhood Group fits into an ASG Chapter?
A neighborhood group is an important part of a Chapter of the American Sewing Guild, Inc. It is organized by members of the chapter to get together and discuss sewing topics that interest them. Often the group gets started because its participants live near each other in a small area served by the Chapter or to focus on a particular area of sewing like embroidery, garment sewing, serger expertise, etc. Focused groups are called Special Interest groups.
A Chapter can have several Neighborhood or Special Interest groups, and all members are welcome to participate in as many groups as they wish. In fact, ASG members can attend any Neighborhood Group across the country! Meetings usually consist of a short “business and announcements” portion, a “Sew and Tell” session, and a program. Members are encouraged to bring their sewing projects, either completed or in-progress, for Sew and Tell to share their knowledge, creativity and completions or to get input on how to solve a sewing problem.
Programs may be demonstrations, hands-on projects, or presentations by members or outside speakers. Some groups take field trips, do charity sewing, or hold other sewing-related events. Neighborhood Group and Special Interest meetings are fun, informal, inclusive and provide a great learning experience.
